El 26 de abril de 1986, el más grave accidente en la historia de la industria nuclear ocurrió en la Unidad 4 de la central nuclear de Chernobyl, en la antigua Unión de Repúblicas Socialistas Soviéticas, cerca de las actuales fronteras de Bielorusia, la Federación Rusa y Ucrania. El reactor fue destruido y, durante los siguientes diez días aproximadamente, grandes cantidades de material radiactivo fueron liberadas en el medio ambiente
